Vegan Spinach and Mushroom Plait

IMG_2297
This is my super yummy vegan Spinach and Mushroom Pastry. It’s really easy and only takes around 15-20 minutes to make all up.

Notes: I use already chopped frozen spinach portions (about 200g, or half a pack) just to make it easier and quicker. I also use Tofutti brand Better Than Cream Cheese.

Ingredients:
1 sheet of frozen puff pastry
A little oil or vegan margarine
Mushrooms, chopped
Spinach, finely chopped
1/2 tub Tofutti Better Than Cream Cheese

Spinach and Mushroom Plait:
Preheat oven to 200°C.

Thaw out a sheet of puff pastry.

Heat a little oil or vegan margarine in a frying pan and add mushrooms and spinach (as much or as little as you’d like and get the ratio you want). Heat until well cooked, then add about half a tub of vegan cream cheese (if you want it really full, you can add a whole tub). Heat and mix until well combined.

Grease or line a baking tray and lay the pastry. If you want to plait the pastry leave a section in the middle of the pastry for the filling and cut strips down on both sides making sure you have about the same thickness for each strip. Pour the filling into the middle line of the pastry and plait the sides one over the other on top of the pastry. Fold in the ends.

Brush some oil or melted vegan margarine over the pastry and cook in oven for about 10 – 15 minutes. Just keep checking until the pastry is as crispy as you like.

Cut and eat! YUM!

Royal Melbourne Show Shame: Abusing Animals Since 1848

This year the Royal Melbourne Show has it’s usual attractions, rides, showbags and even animal abuse. Putting aside their annual blue ribbon competitions for “livestock”, and their petting zoo. The Melbourne Show also offers up an “educational program” where large crowds of people gather around tiny pens in which pregnant Sheep, Goats and Llamas are forced to  give birth as part of their Birthing Centre, clearly with no mind to the animals wellbeing.

While there so far is no “proof” of induced labour it is very clear that due to statements like this – “The Birthing Centre will have various animals give birth at the Show this year, including sheep, goats and llamas." – Royal Melbourne Show website 2011 These births are planned events. These animals are forced (whether induced or not) to give birth in front of large screaming audiences of people.

“Come, listen and learn what a farmer does in the newly created education hub. Learn about the parts of an animal, talk to a farmer and learn what happens on a farm.” – Royal Melbourne Show website 2011 – I’m sure these farmer’s will be telling the G rated version of what happens on a farm. No truths about slaughterhouses and forced pregnancies to keep a dairy cow giving milk while her babe is ripped away either to become an unhealthy, abused and afraid dairy cow like her mother or to be made into veal at the slaughterhouse.

The Royal Melbourne Show runs from the 24th of September to the 4th of October, 2011. Please sign the petition to stop this abuse here.

KFC Removes “Free Roaming” Chickens from it’s ads. Thanks Australian Watchdog!

The ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) launched legal action against Baiada Poultry and Bartter Enterprises which supply the Steggles brand.  KFC Australia and Steggles websites stated that chickens raised for KFC are “Free to Roam”. KFC quickly pulled all mention of the “free roaming” birds from it’s website, yet Steggles still maintains that it’s chicken’s “roam free in large barns. No Cages at Steggles.” While there may be no cages within the cage that is a Steggles barn, the fact remains that the ACCC saw through the claims, realising that due to the number of chickens within one of Steggle’s barns, there would be no “free roaming”.

Please take a moment to tell Steggles that like the ACCC we’re not dumb enough to believe their false claims. Contact form here.

While you’re at it you can write to KFC Australia and tell them to stop the abuse.

lA Few Facts about KFC:

  • Roughly 1 Billion chickens are killed each year for KFC.
  • Chickens are bred to be top heavy thus resulting in broken bones.
  • Chicken’s throats are slit and dropped in scalding water to remove feathers.
  • Many of KFC’s chickens are sadistically abused by the frustrated factory farmers and slaughter-house workers.

KFC likes to hide behind it’s “Animal Welfare Advisory Committee”. Many of the members have resigned due to frustration, one of them Adele Douglas told the Chicago Tribune that KFC “never had any meetings. They never asked any advice, and then they touted to the press that they had this animal-welfare advisory committee. I felt like I was being used.”

While you may not be a PETA supporter, this video really gets to the heart of the way Steggle’s and KFC treat their chicken’s. Please watch, pass on and learn. This is the first animal abuse video I ever watched and was truly the start of a life change for me personally.

Updates

images (1)Just a couple of quick updates on the blog today!

I have just updated the restaurants section thanks to a lovely reader who let me know about a wonderful restaurant in Swansea called The Ugly Duck Out, who are happy to cater for any dietary requirements. Of course that meant I had to add a Swansea section too, which is wonderful! Thank you, Mark!

Unfortunately, I have had to remove some restaurants which no longer exist too. This now means there are no longer any restaurants listed with a V, meaning vegan, all restaurants in Tassie that I know of are now only VF (vegan friendly), so please write in to contact@vegantasmania.com if you know of any restaurants that aren’t in the list that should be! My absolute favourite restaurant ever, Thai Veggie Hutt has closed it’s two stores in Hobart just recently! I bid you a very sad and hungry farewell!

At the moment I am working hard on getting up an Alcohols page so that you can check in here whenever you need to find out what brands are and are not vegan! It will also have information on which beers/wines etc. from certain companies are vegan and which are not. Like the others it will be an alphabetically anchored list so all you need to do is click on the section you want! How easy is that!?

I have also just added a new button to the sidebar so that you can find me over at Animals Australia’s Unleashed website. It’s a great social networking site for all lovers of animals. So come and join in the fun and add me as a friend!
