Beetle Juice
(Confectioner’s Glaze, Pharmaceutical Glaze, Resinous Glaze, Pure Food Glaze, Natural Glaze) An alcohol based solution made from various types of shellac. Used by the drug industry as a coating material for tablets and capsules. Also used in foods.

Benzoic Acid
Found in almost all vertebrates and berries. Most commercial uses are derived from plants.

Beta Carotene
(Carotene, Provitamin A) A Pigment found in animal tissue and in all plants. Used as a colouring in cosmetics and in the manufacture of Vitamin A.

Biotin
(Vitamin B Factor, Vitamin H) Found in every living cell and in milk and yeast. Used as a texturiser in cosmetics, shampoos and creams.

Blood
Taken from any slaughtered animal. Found in adhesive in plywood, cheese-making, foam rubber, medicines and intravenous feedings. Possibly found in foods like lecithin.

Boar Bristles
Hair taken from wild or captive boars. Used in “natural” toothbrushes, hair brushes etc.

Bone Char
(Boneblack) Bone ash used to produce bone china and in the process of sugars to make them appear whiter. Also serves as the charcoal in aquarium filters.

Crushed/ground animal bones found in some fertilizers, vitamins and supplements as a source of calcium. Also used in toothpastes.

(Spermaceti) A waxy substance produced by the sperm whale. Often used in candles.

Chamois
A leather made from the skin of chamois antelope, sheep, goats and deer.

Cheese
A food made from milk curds. Often made with rennet.

Chitin
Fibre found in crustacean shells. Often found in tanning products.

Cholesterin
(Cholesterol) A steroid alcohol found in all animal fats and oils, nervous tissue, egg yolk and blood. Also derived from lanolin. Found in cosmetics, creams, shampoos, etc.

Civet
Unctuous secretion painfully scraped off a gland very near the genitals of a civet cat. Found in perfumes, beverages, lollies and ice cream.

A purified protein obtained from animals. Produced by breaking down gelatine to smaller protein fragments.

Colours
(Dyes, FD&C Colours) Pigments derived from animal, plant and synthetic sources to colour foods, cosmetics and other products. Widely used FD&C and D&C colours are derived from coal tar which due to their carcinogenic properties are tested on animals.

(Diacetyl Tartaric Ester of Monoglyceride) Originally obtained from animal or plant fatty acids. An emulsifier used as an additive in breads, dairy and meat products. This ingredient was animal tested before being approved for human consumption.

Dexpanthenol
(Panthenol, Panthenyl, Provitamin B-5, Vitamin B-Complex Factor) Obtained from animal, plant or synthetic sources.Found in foods, cosmetics and supplements.

Dextrose
(Glucose) A sugar usually produced by hydrolysis of starch with mineral acids. Can also be produced synthetically. In some countries glucose is run through bone-char filters.

Sunette
(Ace K, Acesulfame) Ace K is an artificial sweetener and while the contents are in fact vegan the safety concerns involved have led to animal testing.

Trypsin
A digestive enzyme which breaks down proteins in the small intestine. Found in the digestive system of vertebrates.

Turtle Oil
(Sea Turtle Oil) Taken from the muscles and genitals of green sea turtles. Used in soaps and cosmetics.

An amino acid which can be found in creams and supplements. May have vegan sources.

Vitamin B Factor
(Biotin, Vitamin H) Found in every living cell and in milk and yeast. Used as a texturiser in cosmetics, shampoos and creams.

Vitamin B-12
Usually obtained from an animal. Some vegan B-12 yeasts and analogs are available including supplements as Spirulina.

Vitamin B-Complex Factor
(Dexpanthenol, Panthenol, Panthenyl, Provitamin B-5)  Obtained from animal, plant or synthetic sources.Found in foods, cosmetics and supplements.

Vitamin D
(Calciferol, Ergocalciferol, Ergosterol, Provitamin D-2, Vitamin D-2, Vitamin D-3) Vitamin D can be found in fish liver oil, milk egg yolks, etc. Vitamin D-2 can come from animal fats or plant sterols and yeast. Wool
Wool from sheep. In Australia especially, farmers practice mulesing. As sheep are bred to be unnaturally fluffy and wrinkly they cut some of this skin and flesh around the backside of sheep without any drugging.
